The Deccan Trap is a vast volcanic province formed during the late Cretaceous (~66 million years ago), covering ~5 lakh sq. km across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and parts of Andhra Pradesh. Its basaltic lava flows and lateritic soils offer rich geological, agricultural, and mineral resources.

Natural Resource Potentials of Deccan Trap

  1. Mineral Resources

    • Manganese: Found in districts like Nagpur and Bhandara (Maharashtra).
    • Bauxite: In lateritic caps over basalts (e.g., Satara, Kolhapur) – used in aluminium production.
    • Iron ore & Copper: Small deposits in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
    • Zeolites & Bentonite clay: For industrial uses like water purification and drilling mud.
  2. Soil Fertility

    • Black cotton soil (Regur): Derived from basaltic weathering, high in calcium and magnesium, ideal for cotton, soybean, pulses, and oilseeds.
    • Supports cash crops like sugarcane in irrigated zones.
  3. Groundwater Potential

    • Weathered basalt and fractures act as aquifers; critical for irrigation in semi-arid areas.
    • Used extensively in Maharashtra’s sugarcane belt.
