"Critical minerals have emerged as the new strategic resources of the 21st century." Discuss their significance for India's economic and strategic security. Examine how international partnerships can strengthen India's critical mineral ecosystem.

The global transition towards clean energy and advanced technologies has intensified competition for critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and rare earth elements. The recent India–Australia agreement on uranium exports and critical minerals cooperation reflects India's efforts to build resilient and diversified mineral supply chains.

Significance of critical minerals

  1. Energy transition – Critical minerals are indispensable for electric vehicles, battery storage and renewable energy systems. e.g.: Lithium and cobalt for lithium-ion batteries.
  2. Strategic autonomy – Secure access reduces dependence on a few countries for essential mineral supplies.
  3. Manufacturing competitiveness – Electronics, semiconductors and advanced manufacturing require reliable critical mineral availability.
  4. Defence preparedness – Rare earths and speciality minerals are essential for missiles, radars, aircraft and defence electronics.
  5. Digital economy – Smartphones, data centres, artificial intelligence hardware and communication technologies depend on critical minerals.
  6. Industrial growth – Supports initiatives such as Make in India, National Manufacturing Mission and clean technology industries.
  7. Supply chain resilience – Diversified sourcing reduces vulnerability to geopolitical disruptions and export restrictions.

Role of international partnerships

  1. Diversified imports – Partnerships with Australia, Argentina and African countries reduce concentration risks.
  2. Technology collaboration – Joint exploration, mining and mineral processing enhance domestic capabilities.
  3. Investment in overseas assets – Acquisition of mineral blocks abroad ensures long-term resource security.
  4. Value chain integration – International cooperation enables India to move beyond raw mineral imports towards refining and battery manufacturing.
  5. Trusted supply chains – Collaboration with like-minded countries strengthens resilient and transparent global mineral networks.

Way Forward

  1. Accelerate domestic exploration through geological surveys, private participation and faster approvals.
  2. Develop processing and recycling capacity by investing in refining, urban mining and circular economy practices.
  3. Strengthen the National Critical Mineral Mission with strategic reserves, international partnerships and long-term supply agreements.

Critical minerals are no longer merely industrial inputs but strategic assets shaping economic growth, technological leadership and national security. A balanced strategy combining domestic resource development with trusted international partnerships will be essential for India's resilient energy and manufacturing transition.
