The total emoluments of two persons are the same, but one gets allowances to the extent of $65\%$ of his basic pay and the other gets allowances to the extent of $80\%$ of his basic pay. The ratio of the basic pay of the former to the basic pay of the latter is

Given: Let the basic pay of the first person be $X$ . Let the basic pay of the second person be $Y$ . The total emoluments of both persons are the same.

For the first person: Allowances = $0.65 \times X$ Total emoluments = $X + 0.65 \times X = 1.65 \times X$

For the second person: Allowances = $0.80 \times Y$ Total emoluments = $Y + 0.80 \times Y = 1.80 \times Y$ Equating the total emoluments: $1.65 \times X = 1.80 \times Y$ Solving for the ratio of $X$ to $Y$ : $X/Y = 1.80/1.65$
