Explanation

Sum of ages 3 years ago: The sum of the ages of 5 members 3 years ago is 80 years. Average age 3 years ago: The average age of the family 3 years ago was the sum of ages divided by the number of members: 80/580 / 5 This gives the average age of the family members 3 years ago:

Current sum of ages of 5 family members: Each member has aged by 3 years in the past 3 years. Hence, the total increase in the sum of ages is: 5 members * 3 years = 15 years So, the sum of ages today: 80+15=9580 + 15 = 95 years

Current sum of ages for 6 family members (including the baby): Since the average age today is the same as it was 3 years ago (16 years), the total sum of ages for the 6 family members today will be: 6×16=966 \times 16 = 96 years

Age of the baby: The sum of ages of the 6 members today is 96 years, but the sum of ages of the 5 original members is 95 years. Therefore, the age of the baby is: 9695=196 - 95 = 1 year
