Demand of the Question

  • Definition and explanation of cloud seeding
  • Discussion of its potential role in addressing air pollution in cities like Delhi

What you wrote:

Cloud seeding is a weather modification technique that aims to enhance rainfall or influence cloud formation by dispersing substances like Silver Iodide, Sodium Chloride, Potassium iodide, etc into clouds. The Delhi government, along with IIT Kanpur attempted this and soon will receive its first artificial rainfall to tackle air pollution.

Suggestions to improve:

  • Could enhance with recent data (e.g., Union Ministry of Earth Sciences launched national cloud seeding program in early 2025 for drought-prone regions and urban air pollution management).

[DRAWING: An aircraft injects substances into moisture-bearing natural clouds. These chemicals mimic particles that serve as condensation nuclei. Once they get heavy as water droplets, they fall as rain.]

Potential role in addressing air pollution :-

1. Temporary reduction of air pollutants in cities like Delhi - washes out suspended PM2.5 & PM10 & other air pollutants from the air & improve AQI for a short period.

2. Reduction of smog episodes - Temperature inversion in Delhi winters trap pollutants near the ground - induced rain can disrupt the inversion layer, helping disperse pollutants.

3. Moisture-induced dust control - added humidity can settle dust particles, particularly in windy conditions.

4. Support to agriculture - added rain can reduce crop-residue burning pressure, indirectly curbing seasonal smog.

5. Respite to population after high-AQI episodes - It can provide relief to urbanites especially post-Diwali by improving air quality, giving them a much-needed respite from pollution.

Suggestions to improve:

  • Could add quantitative data (e.g., studies show cloud seeding can reduce PM2.5 levels by up to 15% under optimal conditions)
  • Could mention specific success examples from other cities or international practices

Challenges in cloud seeding :-

6. Requires favourable cloud conditions - seeding works only when moisture-laden clouds are already present. eg - Delhi's post-Diwali seeding was delayed due to lack of favourable atmospheric conditions.

7. Uncertainty - success heavily depends on cloud type, humidity, wind and temperature.

8. Environmental concerns - excess use of chemical raises ecological and soil contamination concerns.

9. Cost & logistical issues - requires specialised aircraft, accurate forecasting and real-time monitoring.

10. Temporary relief only - does not remove actual pollution source.

Suggestions to improve:

  • Could explore regulatory and coordination challenges between state governments and central agencies for large-scale implementation.

Way forward :-

11. Strengthen scientific research & validation - Region-specific pilot studies required.

12. Establish national cloud-seeding research program.

13. Address the root cause of air pollution - industries, vehicles, stubble burning, power generation, etc in cities.

14. Economic & cost-benefit optimization - explore PPP models & CSR funding.

Cloud seeding can provide temporary relief from severe air pollution. However, way forward lies in sincere governance, inter agency synergy, sustainable urban planning, long term cuts in emissions so that the skies we see today are cleaner tomorrow.

Suggestions to improve:

  • Could strengthen by linking to broader environmental policy frameworks and specific timeline expectations for implementation.

Excellent comprehensive answer with strong technical understanding, current examples, and balanced perspective. The systematic structure covering definition, roles, challenges, and solutions demonstrates thorough grasp of the topic with good use of diagram.
