Discuss how the use of advanced technologies like 3D sensors, GPS, and Artificial Intelligence can help improve road safety and infrastructure management in India.

Introduction

India has one of the largest road networks in the world, but it also records a high number of road accidents and infrastructure-related inefficiencies. To address these challenges, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated the use of advanced technologies such as 3D sensors, GPS, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to monitor, maintain, and manage roads more effectively.

Body

  1. Role of advanced technologies in road management:

    • 3D Sensors and Laser Systems: These systems capture detailed, high-resolution images of road surfaces, helping identify cracks, unevenness, and other defects with precision. This ensures scientific maintenance rather than reactive repair.
    • GPS-based Mapping: GPS allows real-time location tagging of road defects and accident-prone areas, ensuring data accuracy and facilitating timely interventions.
    • AI and Data Analytics: The AI-based Data Lake portal analyzes huge volumes of road condition data. It helps prioritize repairs, predict wear and tear, and plan long-term maintenance using predictive analytics.
  2. Enhancing Road Safety and Efficiency:

    • Identification of “Black Spots”: Using accident data and sensor inputs, NHAI has identified nearly 13,795 accident-prone locations (till March 2025). AI helps in trend analysis and suggests corrective measures like better signage, lighting, or geometric redesign.
    • Scientific Maintenance Scheduling: Data collection every six months ensures that road health is continuously monitored, preventing accidents caused by neglected maintenance.
    • Asset Management and Budget Optimization: Data-driven insights allow optimal resource allocation, reducing wasteful expenditure and improving overall project efficiency.
  3. Broader Impact on Infrastructure Planning:

    • Evidence-based Decision Making: Reliable, real-time data supports policy formulation and project prioritization.
    • Transparency and Accountability: Digital monitoring reduces manual inspection errors and corruption, promoting accountability.
    • Integration with e-DAR and Smart Mobility: The e-DAR (Electronic Detailed Accident Report) platform can be integrated with AI systems to streamline investigation and compensation processes.

Conclusion/Way Forward

By leveraging technologies like 3D sensors, GPS, and AI, India is moving toward a data-driven, preventive, and scientific approach to road management. This will not only enhance the safety and durability of highways but also contribute to achieving broader goals under Vision 2047 — ensuring sustainable, safe, and world-class infrastructure for a growing economy.
