- To improve the efficiency of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs).
- To ensure the production of high-quality recyclable treated water for sustainable use.
- Key Features:
- Introduces Clean Water Credits with a star-rating system (3 to 5 stars).
- Certification of Clean Water Credits is valid for 6 months.
- Financial incentives are awarded to STPs achieving 3-star ratings or above.
- Role of STPs:

- Current Status of Treatment Capacity (as per CPCB, March 2021):
- Water treatment capacity: 27.3%.
- Sewage treatment capacity: 18.6% (with 5.2% capacity under development).
- Focus of AMRUT Versions:
- AMRUT 1.0: Provision of basic services like water supply and sewerage.
- AMRUT 2.0: Holistic approach with a City Water Balance Plan (CWBP) focusing on recycling and reusing treated wastewater.

- Link with Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0: Both emphasize effective wastewater management to achieve sustainable urban development.
