Why Has UPSC Designed a Three-Stage Selection Process?

An officer may have to handle disaster management in the morning, review development projects in the afternoon, and resolve public grievances in the evening. Therefore, UPSC evaluates candidates through multiple stages:

Prelims tests:

  • Awareness
  • Accuracy
  • Speed
  • Aptitude & Reasoning skills
  • Conceptual clarity

Mains tests:

  • Analytical ability
  • Writing skills
  • Decision-making
  • Understanding of issues

Interview tests:

  • Personality
  • Leadership qualities
  • Administrative aptitude
  • Emotional intelligence

Together, these stages ensure that selected candidates possess both knowledge and character.
