Prelims 2025

The difference between any two natural numbers is 10. What can be said about the natural numbers which are divisible by 5 and lie between these two numbers?

Select an option to attempt

Explanation

Let the two natural numbers be nn and n+10n + 10.

We need to find how many numbers divisible by 5 lie strictly between them.

Case 1: n=1n = 1 \rightarrow numbers between 1 and 11 are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Multiples of 5 in this range: 5, 10 \rightarrow two numbers.

Case 2: n=5n = 5 \rightarrow numbers between 5 and 15 are 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14. Multiples of 5 in this range: 10 \rightarrow one number.

Thus, depending on the starting point, there can be one or two such numbers.

Hence, the correct conclusion is that there can be more than one such number.
