The average of three numbers p, q, and r is k. pp is as much more than the average as qq is less than the average. What is the value of rr?

Explanation

Let p be xx more than the average, and q be xx less than the average.

Then: p=k+xp = k + x q=kxq = k - x

We know the average of p, q, and r is k: (p+q+r)3=k\frac{(p + q + r)}{3} = k

Substitute the values of p and q: [(k+x)+(kx)+r]3=k\frac{[(k + x) + (k - x) + r]}{3} = k (2k+r)3=k\frac{(2k + r)}{3} = k 2k+r=3k2k + r = 3k r=kr = k

Hence, the value of r is k.
