Prelims 2020

Two Statements S1 and S2 are given below followed by a Question:

S1 : nn is a prime number. S2 : nn leaves a remainder of 1 when divided by 4.

Question: If nn is a unique natural number between 10 and 20, then what is nn?

Which one of the following is correct in respect of above Statements and the Question?

Select an option to attempt

Explanation

Statement 1 is insufficient. Statement 1 tells us that nn is a prime number, meaning nn could be one of the following: 11, 13, 17, or 19. However, this does not provide a unique value for nn, so Statement 1 alone is insufficient to answer the question.

Statement 2 is insufficient. Statement 2 tells us that when nn is divided by 4, the remainder is 1. This means nn could be 13 or 17, but this does not provide a unique value for nn either. Therefore, Statement 2 alone is insufficient to answer the question.

Statements 1 and 2 together: Insufficient. Combining both statements, we get two possible values for nn: 13 and 17. Since we still have two possibilities, the statements together are insufficient to determine a unique value for nn.
