Climate change has significantly increased the frequency, intensity, and unpredictability of extreme weather events across India. Rising global temperatures have altered atmospheric and oceanic processes, leading to more frequent heatwaves, intense rainfall, floods, droughts, and cyclones. India, with its diverse ecology and large population dependent on climate-sensitive livelihoods, is particularly vulnerable to these changes.

Impact on Ecology

Extreme weather events have severe consequences for natural ecosystems. Prolonged heatwaves and droughts reduce soil moisture, affect forest health, and increase the incidence of wildfires, leading to habitat degradation and biodiversity loss. Intense rainfall and floods result in soil erosion, siltation of rivers, and destruction of wetlands, which act as natural buffers against floods. Coastal ecosystems such as mangroves and coral reefs are threatened by cyclones, sea-level rise, and ocean warming, weakening their ability to protect coastlines and support marine biodiversity. Changes in temperature and precipitation patterns also disrupt species distribution, breeding cycles, and food chains, affecting overall ecological balance.

Impact on Human Livelihoods

A large section of India’s population depends on climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, and forestry. Irregular monsoons, droughts, and floods reduce crop productivity, threaten food security, and increase farmers’ distress. Heatwaves adversely affect human health, especially among outdoor workers, the elderly, and urban poor, leading to increased morbidity and mortality. Extreme events also damage infrastructure, disrupt supply chains, and cause displacement and migration, particularly in coastal and flood-prone regions. Livelihood losses further exacerbate poverty and social inequalities.

Measures to Enhance Resilience

Enhancing resilience requires a multi-pronged approach. Climate-resilient agriculture practices such as drought-resistant crop varieties, efficient irrigation, and crop diversification can reduce vulnerability. Strengthening early warning systems and disaster preparedness helps minimise loss of life and property. Ecosystem-based adaptation, including wetland conservation, afforestation, and mangrove restoration, provides cost-effective protection against climate impacts. Urban planning that incorporates heat action plans, flood management, and resilient infrastructure is also crucial. At the policy level, effective implementation of the National Action Plan on Climate Change and community participation can ensure long-term adaptation and sustainability.
