"The AI revolution is creating a new form of resource competition in the semiconductor industry." Examine this statement with reference to the recent global surge in electronic device prices due to chip shortages. Discuss its implications for India's electronics manufacturing and digital ambitions.

The recent increase in electronic device prices due to AI-driven semiconductor shortages highlights a structural shift in global chip demand, posing fresh challenges for manufacturing, affordability and technological sovereignty.

AI is reshaping global semiconductor demand

  1. AI infrastructure is consuming advanced chips. e.g.: Large AI data centres require High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM), DRAM and NAND chips.
  2. Consumer electronics face supply constraints. e.g.: Recent price hikes in premium laptops and tablets reflect rising semiconductor costs.
  3. Chip prices have become more volatile. e.g.: Demand for AI accelerators has tightened global memory markets.
  4. Production remains geographically concentrated. e.g.: Taiwan, South Korea and the United States dominate advanced semiconductor manufacturing.

Implications for India

  1. Electronics manufacturing costs may rise. e.g.: India still imports a majority of semiconductor components.
  2. Digital affordability could decline. e.g.: Costlier smartphones and laptops may slow digital inclusion.
  3. Export competitiveness may weaken. e.g.: Higher input costs reduce margins under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme.
  4. MSMEs may face greater production costs. e.g.: Electronics component manufacturers depend on imported chips.
  5. Strategic import dependence continues. e.g.: Semiconductor imports remain critical despite India's growing assembly ecosystem.

Need for semiconductor resilience

  1. Accelerate domestic fabrication. e.g.: India Semiconductor Mission supports indigenous fabrication capacity.
  2. Strengthen chip design ecosystem. e.g.: Design Linked Incentive (DLI) Scheme promotes domestic semiconductor innovation.
  3. Expand Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP). e.g.: ATMP facilities increase domestic value addition.
  4. Diversify trusted supply chains. e.g.: Partnerships through iCET and the Quad can reduce concentration risks.

Way Forward

  1. Develop an integrated semiconductor value chain. Link fabrication, design, packaging, critical minerals and skilled manpower.
  2. Increase public and private R&D investments. Build long-term technological self-reliance through industry-academia collaboration.

Semiconductors are now strategic economic assets. Building a resilient domestic semiconductor ecosystem will be crucial for India's manufacturing ambitions, digital transformation and long-term technological sovereignty.
