Prime Minister recently inaugurated National Makhana Board in Purnea, Bihar as part of Union Budget 2025 Initiative.

Significance on livelihoods of rural people -
a) Bihar accounts for 90% of Makhana production of the country due to perfect ecology in Mithilanchal region, an area which majority having agro-based livelihoods.
b) Board will provide handholding and training support to Makhana farmers, thus improving skills and enhancing productivity.
c) Assurance that farmers will receive benefits from all relevant Government schemes.
d) Transition from low yielding traditional farming method to high yielding modern techniques.
e) Poverty alleviation and awareness generation.
f) Creation of FPOs (Farmer Producer Organizations) - organized market chains for smooth production, collective bargaining power and improve exports.
g) To weed out dominance of intermediaries.
h) Weed management in water bodies, better quality equipment and better Cold Storage facilities will enhance production and profit of farmers.
