Why is the Strait of Hormuz frequently in the news? Discuss its geographical and strategic significance.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran (north) and Oman/UAE (south), connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. It is one of the world’s most strategically vital maritime chokepoints.

🧭 Why is it frequently in the news?

The strait often comes into focus due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia, especially involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. Recent developments such as:

Threats by Iran to block the strait Attacks on oil tankers and commercial vessels Increased military presence and naval patrols

have raised concerns over disruption of global energy supplies.

Geographical Significance It is a narrow passage (≈33 km wide at its narrowest point), making it vulnerable to blockades. Acts as the only sea route for oil exports from major producers like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, and UAE. Functions as a critical maritime chokepoint, similar to the Suez Canal and Malacca Strait.

👉 A simple map showing Persian Gulf → Strait of Hormuz → Gulf of Oman can fetch extra marks.

⚡ Strategic Significance

  1. Energy Security Nearly 20% of global petroleum liquids pass through the strait daily. Any disruption leads to global oil price spikes.
  2. Global Trade & Economy Essential for maritime trade flows between Asia, Europe, and beyond. Instability affects shipping costs, insurance premiums, and supply chains.
  3. India’s Interests India imports over 60% of its crude oil from the Gulf region. Disruptions can lead to: Inflationary pressures Trade deficit expansion Energy insecurity Presence of a large Indian diaspora in the region adds another layer of concern.

Conclusion Thus, the Strait of Hormuz is not merely a geographical passage but a geopolitical flashpoint with far-reaching implications for global stability. Ensuring its security is essential for safeguarding energy flows, economic stability, and India’s national interests.
