What are the environmental concerns of deep-sea mining? Suggest measures for its sustainable management.

Deep-sea mining involves extraction of polymetallic nodules, sulphides and mineral-rich crusts from the ocean floor. India’s Deep Ocean Mission is expanding capabilities to explore such resources, particularly critical minerals needed for clean energy and advanced technologies.

Environmental concerns of deep-sea mining

  1. Habitat destruction can permanently disturb fragile seabed ecosystems through mining machines. e.g: Polymetallic nodules provide habitats for sponges, corals and other organisms.
  2. Biodiversity loss is difficult to predict because much of the deep ocean remains scientifically unexplored. e.g: Indian surveys have identified several deep-sea species new to science.
  3. Sediment plumes generated during extraction can spread beyond mining sites and smother benthic organisms.
  4. Slow ecological recovery makes damage potentially irreversible as polymetallic nodules form over millions of years.
  5. Noise and light pollution from mining equipment may disturb organisms adapted to dark and stable environments.
  6. Food-web disruption can occur through changes in microorganisms and benthic communities.
  7. Carbon-cycle impacts remain uncertain as deep oceans act as important long-term carbon reservoirs.

Need for deep-sea exploration

  1. Critical minerals such as nickel, cobalt, copper and manganese support batteries and renewable technologies.
  2. Resource security can reduce dependence on concentrated terrestrial mineral supply chains.
  3. Scientific knowledge can improve understanding of deep-ocean biodiversity. e.g: India’s Deep Ocean Mission and MATSYA-6000.

Way Forward

  1. Apply the precautionary principle before permitting commercial exploitation.
  2. Establish comprehensive biodiversity baselines and independent environmental impact assessments.
  3. Strengthen International Seabed Authority safeguards and designate ecologically sensitive no-mining zones.
  4. Prioritise recycling, mineral substitution and circular economy to reduce extraction pressure.

Deep oceans represent both strategic resources and irreplaceable natural capital. India’s blue economy must therefore ensure that technological capability is guided by ecological limits and intergenerational responsibility.
