What is a Geographical Indication (GI) tag? Explain how GI-tagged products such as Tezpur Litchi contribute to rural development, branding, and export promotion in India.

A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is an intellectual property right granted to products whose quality, reputation, or characteristics are essentially linked to a specific geographical region. In India, GI tags are governed by the Geographical Indications Registry under the GI of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.

The recent export of Tezpur Litchi from Assam to Dubai highlights the growing importance of GI-tagged products in India's agricultural economy.

Contribution of GI-tagged products:

  1. Rural Development

Enables farmers to receive premium prices due to product uniqueness. Generates employment in cultivation, processing, packaging, and logistics. Encourages preservation of traditional farming practices.

  1. Branding and Market Recognition

Creates a distinct regional identity and protects products from imitation. Enhances consumer trust through authenticity and quality assurance. Promotes local products on national and international platforms.

  1. Export Promotion

Increases global visibility of niche Indian agricultural products. Facilitates access to premium international markets. Supports the government's vision of taking local products from "Local to Global."

Thus, GI-tagged products such as Tezpur Litchi serve as powerful instruments for farmer welfare, regional branding, and enhancing India's agri-export competitiveness.
