AI chatbots are increasingly becoming a first point of contact during emotional distress. Examine the opportunities and risks of using Artificial Intelligence for mental healthcare in India.

Artificial Intelligence is increasingly being used for mental-health screening, information and conversational support. In India, where access to professional care remains uneven, AI can improve accessibility but cannot replace trained mental-health professionals.

Opportunities for mental healthcare

  1. Round-the-clock access provides immediate first-level support. e.g: AI-assisted digital mental-health platforms.
  2. Reduced stigma may encourage individuals to discuss sensitive concerns anonymously. e.g: Conversational chatbots.
  3. Early screening can identify behavioural patterns requiring professional attention. e.g: AI-based depression screening tools.
  4. Multilingual support can overcome linguistic barriers. e.g: BHASHINI-based language technologies.
  5. Wider geographical reach can support underserved regions. e.g: Integration with Tele-MANAS.
  6. Personalised assistance can provide reminders and guided self-care. e.g: Cognitive behavioural therapy-based digital tools.
  7. Clinical assistance can help professionals monitor patients and prioritise high-risk cases.

Risks of excessive dependence

  1. Incorrect responses may reinforce harmful beliefs during vulnerable moments.
  2. Delayed professional care can occur when users treat chatbot advice as therapy.
  3. Weak crisis detection may miss indirect indications of self-harm or severe distress.
  4. Emotional dependence can develop through continuous personalised conversations.
  5. Algorithmic bias may produce unsuitable advice across languages, genders and cultures.
  6. Privacy concerns arise from processing highly sensitive conversations. e.g: Mental-health data under the DPDP framework.

Way Forward

  1. Mandate clinical validation, safety audits and crisis-escalation protocols for mental-health AI.
  2. Connect high-risk users directly with human support. e.g: Tele-MANAS and emergency services.
  3. Apply privacy-by-design while keeping qualified professionals at the centre of care.

AI can widen the first door to mental healthcare, but should not become the final destination. Responsible integration must combine technological accessibility with professional judgement, privacy and human empathy.
