"Green hydrogen has the potential to become a cornerstone of India's clean energy transition, but its success depends on building a comprehensive hydrogen ecosystem." Discuss.

The launch of India's first hydrogen-powered train marks a significant milestone in the country's green mobility journey. It reflects India's broader commitment to decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors and achieving its Net Zero target by 2070 through the adoption of green hydrogen technologies.

Significance of green hydrogen

  1. Decarbonises transport – Hydrogen-powered trains provide a clean alternative for non-electrified rail routes, emitting only water vapour.
  2. Strengthens energy security – Domestic hydrogen production can reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.
  3. Supports industrial decarbonisation – Green hydrogen can replace fossil fuels in steel, fertilisers, refineries and cement industries.
  4. Facilitates renewable energy integration – Surplus solar and wind power can be converted into hydrogen, improving energy storage and grid stability.
  5. Promotes technological leadership – Indigenous hydrogen technologies support innovation and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
  6. Creates new economic opportunities – Hydrogen manufacturing, storage and infrastructure can generate investment, employment and export potential.
  7. Contributes to climate commitments – Green hydrogen supports India's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and Net Zero 2070 goal.

Challenges in the hydrogen transition

  1. High production costs – Green hydrogen remains significantly costlier than conventional fossil fuels.
  2. Infrastructure constraints – Dedicated production, storage, transport and refuelling networks are still at a nascent stage.
  3. Technology gaps – Fuel cells, electrolysers and hydrogen storage technologies require further domestic innovation.
  4. Renewable power requirement – Large-scale green hydrogen production demands abundant low-cost renewable electricity.
  5. Safety and regulatory issues – Uniform standards for storage, transportation and handling need to evolve.

Way Forward

  1. Accelerate the National Green Hydrogen Mission through production incentives and demand creation.
  2. Develop hydrogen infrastructure including hydrogen hubs, refuelling stations and integrated transport corridors.
  3. Promote public-private partnerships and R&D to reduce costs, improve electrolysers and scale indigenous manufacturing.

Green hydrogen offers India an opportunity to simultaneously advance energy security, industrial competitiveness and climate action. Building a robust hydrogen ecosystem through technology, infrastructure and policy support will determine the success of India's green energy transition.
