Examine the importance of Gilgit-Baltistan for India and discuss the challenges arising from Pakistan’s administrative and electoral measures in the region.

Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), located in the northernmost part of the erstwhile princely state of Jammu & Kashmir, is a strategically vital region presently under Pakistan’s control. India considers it an integral part of its sovereign territory based on the Instrument of Accession (1947).

Significance of Gilgit-Baltistan for India

Challenges from Pakistan’s Administrative and Electoral Measures Legitimization of Occupation: Elections and constitutional changes seek to institutionalize Pakistan’s control. Demographic and Political Changes: Alterations in governance may affect the region's original demographic composition. Strategic Consolidation: Enhanced Chinese presence through CPEC raises security concerns for India. Human Rights Issues: Alleged restrictions on political freedoms and local representation continue to attract criticism. Conclusion

Gilgit-Baltistan remains central to India's territorial claims, regional security, and connectivity interests. India must continue diplomatic engagement, uphold its legal position, and highlight concerns regarding sovereignty, demographic changes, and human rights while pursuing a peaceful resolution of the broader Kashmir issue.

Way Forward: “Firm diplomacy, international awareness, and adherence to international law remain essential to safeguarding India’s interests in Gilgit-Baltistan.”
