"In the digital economy, protection of intellectual property extends beyond patents to securing global manufacturing supply chains." Examine this statement in the light of the recent Tata Electronics data breach involving Apple.

The recent cyberattack on Tata Electronics, which reportedly exposed confidential Apple manufacturing documents, supplier details and product specifications, has highlighted that intellectual property security is now a critical determinant of global manufacturing competitiveness.

Significance of IP protection in manufacturing -

  1. Safeguards innovation – Proprietary designs, trade secrets and manufacturing processes are key sources of competitive advantage. e.g.: Apple product specifications and supplier maps.
  2. Strengthens investor confidence – Robust IP protection encourages multinational corporations to establish high-value manufacturing and R&D facilities in India.
  3. Secures global value chains – A breach at one supplier can compromise the intellectual property of multiple firms, disrupting integrated supply chains.
  4. Supports high-tech manufacturing – Electronics, semiconductors and defence manufacturing rely heavily on protection of confidential technical information.
  5. Enhances India's manufacturing credibility – Secure digital infrastructure complements initiatives such as Make in India and the Semiconductor Mission.

Measures to strengthen IP security -

  1. Strengthen cybersecurity standards – Mandate robust cyber risk management for critical manufacturing enterprises and suppliers.
  2. Promote supply-chain cyber resilience – Extend security audits and compliance requirements across vendor ecosystems.
  3. Strengthen legal protection of trade secrets – Develop a comprehensive framework for confidential business information alongside existing IP laws.
  4. Build cyber capabilities – Enhance coordination through CERT-In, the National Cyber Security Coordinator and sector-specific cybersecurity frameworks.
  5. Encourage security-by-design – Integrate cybersecurity into manufacturing, cloud infrastructure and industrial control systems from the design stage.

As India emerges as a trusted global manufacturing hub, protecting intellectual property is no longer merely a legal obligation but an economic necessity. Secure supply chains will be essential for attracting technology-intensive investments and sustaining India's position in global value chains.
