The ongoing conflict between US, Israel and Iran reflects deeper structural tensions in West Asia. Discuss the causes of the conflict and examine its implications for regional stability and India's foreign policy.

Introduction The ongoing confrontation between the United States, Israel, and Iran is not an isolated or sudden development. Rather, it reflects long-standing structural tensions in West Asia rooted in ideological rivalry, security dilemmas, nuclear concerns, and competing geopolitical alignments. The present escalation represents the manifestation of deeper historical and strategic fault lines in the region. Causes of the Conflict

  1. Ideological and Strategic Rivalry: Since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Iran has positioned itself in opposition to Israel’s existence and U.S. influence in the region. Israel perceives Iran as an existential threat, particularly due to Tehran’s support for armed non-state actors hostile to Israel. This ideological hostility has entrenched mutual distrust.
  2. Nuclear Issue and Security Dilemma: Iran’s nuclear program has been a major flashpoint. While Iran claims peaceful intent, Israel and the United States suspect weaponization. This has led to sanctions, covert operations, and preventive strike doctrines, deepening the security dilemma where defensive measures by one side are viewed as offensive by the other.
  3. Proxy Warfare and Regional Power Competition: West Asia has witnessed proxy conflicts where Iran and Israel indirectly confront each other. The United States’ strong strategic partnership with Israel further internationalizes the conflict. Thus, what appears as a bilateral issue is in fact embedded in a broader regional power contest. Implications for Regional Stability The escalation threatens wider regional instability. First, disruption of key maritime routes in the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters could destabilize global energy markets, triggering inflationary pressures worldwide. Second, expansion of the conflict may draw in other regional and global powers, increasing the risk of prolonged confrontation. Third, recurring crises weaken already fragile regional security architectures and undermine prospects of diplomatic normalization in West Asia. Implications for India’s Foreign Policy For India, the conflict poses significant strategic challenges. India depends heavily on West Asia for energy imports, making oil price volatility a serious concern. Additionally, the presence of a large Indian diaspora in Gulf countries necessitates careful diplomatic engagement. India’s policy of strategic autonomy requires maintaining balanced relations with all actors — strengthening ties with Israel, sustaining civilizational and economic engagement with Iran, and preserving cooperation with the United States. Thus, India must adopt calibrated diplomacy, support de-escalation, and prioritize stability in the region. Conclusion The conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran reflects entrenched structural tensions in West Asia shaped by ideology, security competition, and power politics. While the immediate crisis may fluctuate, the underlying geopolitical contest persists. For India, prudent diplomacy, diversification of energy sources, and reinforcement of strategic autonomy remain essential to safeguarding national interests amid an increasingly volatile global order.
