The First Asian Buddhist Summit (ABS) was held in New Delhi on November 5–6, 2024.

The Asian Buddhist Summit 2024 has emerged as a landmark event, drawing participants from across the globe to reaffirm the enduring relevance of Buddha Dhamma in shaping contemporary global challenges. Organized by the Ministry of Culture and the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), this summit has highlighted the profound influence of Buddhist teachings on Asian cultures, diplomatic relations, and societal well-being. 

• Buddhism’s Role in Asian Culture: Originating in India over 2,500 years ago, Buddhism has shaped the cultural and philosophical landscapes of many Asian countries. The summit, themed ‘Role of Buddha Dhamma in strengthening Asia’, demonstrated how Buddhism’s principles have endured through history, even during times of crisis, acting as a unifying force.
• India’s Position as the Cradle of Buddhism: India’s historic connection with Buddhism was reinforced at the summit. Emphasis was laid on the role of India in preserving and reviving the ancient Nalanda Tradition, which remains central to Buddhist education worldwide.
• Buddha Dhamma as a Guiding Force: The discussions highlighted how Buddha Dhamma continues to provide spiritual guidance and fosters ethical governance. As per the Delhi Declaration, the summit reaffirmed Buddha Dhamma’s role in uniting nations and communities around principles of non-violence, ethical integrity, and compassion.

• Unity Across Borders: The summit saw participation from 32 countries and over 160 international delegates, including monks, scholars, and diplomats. • Promoting Buddhist Tourism: The summit emphasized the importance of connecting the Asian Buddhist Circuit through pilgrimage and shared heritage. Sites like Bodh Gaya, Lumbini, and Sarnath remain critical for religious tourism, which can drive economic development in these regions.
• Sustainable Development: The summit explored how Buddhist teachings can contribute to addressing pressing issues such as environmental sustainability. Buddhist principles of interdependence and mindfulness are increasingly being applied to global challenges like climate change and ethical governance.
• Educational Initiatives: The summit also stressed the importance of transferring Buddhist wisdom to younger generations, proposing initiatives such as academic institutions for monastic education.
