• Around 450 million youth—nearly 70%—are economically disengaged, either unemployed, underemployed, or not in training.
• 86% of students feel unprepared to work in AI-driven environments, exposing the limits of outdated education systems.
• Nearly 90% of girls in low-income countries remain offline, lacking access to basic internet infrastructure.
• In high-income countries, only 1 in 10 teenagers uses digital devices for learning more than an hour per week.
• Just 16% of countries have laws addressing cyberbullying in education, most of which were adopted only after COVID-19.

These trends highlight serious challenges in youth skilling: from digital exclusion and low AI readiness to a lack of safe online learning environments.

The 2025 theme, “Youth Empowerment through AI and Digital Skills”, directly responds to these challenges. It calls for equipping youth with future-ready, tech-driven skills to thrive in a digital world.

The theme emphasizes:

• Bridging the skill gap between education and evolving job markets.
• Promoting digital inclusion, especially for young women and marginalized communities.

India celebrates National Youth Skills Day on 15th July each year, aligning it with the global observance. With over 50% of its population under the age of 25, India faces both a challenge and an opportunity. This day supports the nation’s broader goal of building a skilled, employable, and self-reliant workforce, particularly through flagship programmes like the Skill India Mission.
