A tough road to Hamas disarmament, Pg 14

Key Highlights:

• US President Donald Trump announced that Hamas had agreed to the "final conditions" for a proposed 60-day ceasefire in Gaza.
• The proposal includes a phased ceasefire, Israeli military withdrawal, hostage release and Hamas disarmament.
• A key hurdle is the disagreement over sequencing, with Hamas demanding Israeli withdrawal before disarmament, while Israel insists on the reverse.
• Continued Israeli military operations and restrictions on humanitarian aid remain major obstacles to peace and Gaza's reconstruction.

Detailed Insights:

• The conflict began after Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, leading to a prolonged Israeli military campaign in Gaza.
• Hamas seeks a permanent ceasefire and full Israeli withdrawal, whereas Israel demands the dismantling of Hamas's military capabilities.
• Qatar, Egypt and the United States continue to mediate negotiations for a ceasefire, hostage release and post-conflict arrangements.
• The humanitarian crisis has resulted in widespread displacement and shortages of food, water, medicine and essential services.
• A lasting settlement will require reconstruction assistance, effective governance in Gaza and progress towards a political solution.

Key Concepts Involved:

• Palestinian Authority: The interim self-governing body administering parts of the West Bank under the Oslo Accords.
• Two-State Solution: A proposal for establishing independent Israeli and Palestinian states living side by side in peace.
