A shopkeeper employs a delivery boy and gives him a motorcycle for home delivery. For every delivery, the boy is given ₹ 55. At the end of the day, he also gets ₹ 22 for every kilometre of the distance covered in the day. The boy wants to earn more than ₹ 500500 a day, but does not want to travel more than 100100 km. Which of the following numbers of deliveries would definitely meet his target?

Select an option to attempt

Explanation

Answer: D — The question cannot be answered due to insufficient data

Earnings E=5d+2kE = 5d + 2k where dd = deliveries and kk = km. We need E>500E > 500 to "definitely" hold for the given dd.

Why dd alone is not enough.

The number of kilometres kk depends on the routes the boy actually takes; the only constraint stated is k100k \le 100. To guarantee E>500E > 500 from the value of dd alone, the inequality must hold even in the worst case k=0k = 0, i.e. 5d>500d>1005d > 500 \Rightarrow d > 100.

Check each option.

For d=80,85,90d = 80, 85, 90, taking k=0k = 0:

  • d=80d = 80: E=400E = 400
  • d=85d = 85: E=425E = 425
  • d=90d = 90: E=450E = 450

None of these exceed 500500 in the worst case, so none of A, B, or C "definitely" meets the target. The number of kilometres travelled is essential information that the question does not pin down.
