Prelims 2018

There are 24 equally spaced points lying on the circumference of a circle. What is the maximum number of equilateral triangles that can be drawn by taking sets of three points as the vertices?

Select an option to attempt

Explanation

According to a property of circles, the angle subtended at the center is twice the angle subtended at the circumference.

For equilateral triangles, we need an angle of 60°, which corresponds to 120° at the center.

By symmetry, we can calculate the number of equilateral triangles as = 24/(360120)=824/(\frac{360}{120}) = 8
