Passage

Over the last decade, Indian agriculture has become more robust with record production of food grains and oilseeds. Increased procurement, consequently, has added huge stacks of food grains in the granaries. India is one of the world’s top producers of rice, wheat, milk, fruits and vegetables. India is still home to a quarter of all undernourished people in the world. On an average, almost half of the total expenditure of nearly half of the households is on food.

Which among the following is the most logical corollary to the above passage?

Select an option to attempt

Explanation

Option A is correct. Because the passage mentions India's significant agricultural production and procurement but also highlights the issue of undernourishment, suggesting that improving the efficiency of the farm-to-fork value chain (which can help in better distribution of food and reduce food wastage) could address poverty and malnutrition.

Option B is not correct. Because while increased agricultural productivity is important, the passage implies that the issue of undernourishment persists despite India's high production levels, meaning that just improving productivity is not sufficient to eliminate poverty and malnutrition.

Option C is not correct. Because although India is a major producer of food, the passage highlights that undernourishment remains a serious issue, indicating that agricultural productivity may still need to be improved to address this problem.

Option D is not correct. Because the passage does not suggest that simply allocating more funds for welfare programs will solve the issue, given that the problem of undernourishment is linked to inefficiencies in food distribution rather than solely a lack of resources.
