Passage

Productive jobs are vital for growth, and a good job is the best form of inclusion. More than half of our population depends on agriculture, but the experience of other countries suggests that the number of people dependent on agriculture will have to shrink if per capita incomes in agriculture are to go up substantially. While industry is creating jobs, too many such jobs are low-productivity non-contractual jobs in the unorganized sector, offering low incomes, little protection, and no benefits. Service jobs are relatively of high productivity, but employment growth in services has been slow in recent years.

Select an option to attempt

Explanation

Option A is not correct. The passage emphasizes the importance of productive jobs for growth and inclusion, but it does not directly suggest that service jobs should be prioritized alone. Although service jobs are described as relatively high in productivity, the passage also addresses the need for broader improvements across sectors. Therefore, the focus should not solely be on service jobs, but on creating productive jobs across various sectors.

Option B is not correct. While the passage acknowledges that more than half the population depends on agriculture, it also points out that the number of people dependent on agriculture will need to shrink for per capita incomes in agriculture to rise significantly. However, it does not directly state that farm workers must be shifted to manufacturing or service sectors. The focus is on creating productive jobs in various sectors, not solely on transferring labor from agriculture.

Option C is correct. The passage suggests the need for a dual approach: improving the productivity of agriculture (which would reduce the dependency on it) and creating more productive jobs outside of agriculture (e.g., in industry and services). It points out that while industry is creating jobs, many of them are low-productivity and in the unorganized sector. Therefore, Option C logically reflects the message of the passage: improving agricultural productivity while simultaneously creating productive jobs in other sectors to ensure growth and inclusion.

Option D is not correct. The passage does not focus on specific agricultural methods such as high-yielding hybrid varieties or genetically modified crops to increase income. While the passage addresses agricultural productivity, it suggests a more general need to reduce agricultural dependency and increase the number of productive jobs in other sectors, rather than focusing on specific agricultural techniques. Therefore, this option does not align with the core argument of the passage.
