Prelims 2016

There were 50 faculty members comprising 30 males and the rest of females. No male faculty member knew music, but many of the female faculty members did. The Head of the institution invited six faculty members to a tea party by draw of lots. At the party it was discovered that no member knew music. The conclusion is that:

Select an option to attempt

Explanation

Option A is incorrect. The party cannot comprise only male faculty members, because it is stated that no male faculty member knew music. Since the party attendees knew no music, it would be impossible for all members to be male, as they cannot know music.

Option B is correct. The party comprised only female faculty members who could not render music, because it is explicitly mentioned that many of the female faculty members knew music. Since the attendees did not know music, they must be the females who did not know music.

Option C is incorrect. The party could not have comprised both male and female faculty members, because if any male faculty member attended, they would not be able to know music, but that would still contradict the fact that no member knew music, since some females do know music.

Option D is incorrect. We can indeed deduce something about the gender composition of the party, because we know that no male faculty members knew music, and the attendees at the party did not know music. This leads to the conclusion that all attendees were female who did not know music.
