Prelims 2015

A father is nine times as old as his son and the mother is eight times as old as the son. The sum of the father’s and the mother’s age is 51 years. What is the age of the son?

Select an option to attempt

Explanation

Let the son's age be x.

The father's age is 9x9x. The mother's age is 8x8x.

The sum of the father's and mother's age is 51: 9x+8x=519x + 8x = 51

Simplifying: 17x=5117x = 51

Solving for x: x=5117=3x = \frac{51}{17} = 3

Therefore, the son's age is 3 years.
