UPSC Compulsory English Language Paper 2025: Last Minute Tips & Important Instructions

The UPSC Mains Examination 2025 started on 22nd August, and one of the most important papers is the Compulsory English Language Paper-B, scheduled for 30th August 2025 in the second shift from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM.

• The standard of the English Paper is equivalent to the Matriculation (Class 10) level, making it simple yet crucial to clear.
• This is a qualifying paper — unless you secure the minimum 25% marks, your other Mains papers will not be evaluated.
• Aspirants should focus on basic grammar, comprehension, precise writing, and clear expression rather than over-preparation.

Aspirants must carefully follow the instructions given in the question paper to avoid losing marks due to technical mistakes. Here are the key points:

• Attempt all questions — no optional choices are provided.
• The marks allotted for each question will be clearly mentioned.

• Avoid spelling mistakes. They can cost valuable marks.
• Keep sentences short and crisp.

Exam-Day Strategy

• Manage your time. Don’t spend too long on any one section.
• Maintain neat handwriting and leave margins for clarity.
• Strike off any blank pages to avoid confusion.
• Stay calm and composed. This is a qualifying paper, not a test of advanced English skills.
