Cinema plays an important role in shaping the values and attitudes of society. Discuss its positive and negative influences on India's social fabric with suitable examples.

Cinema both reflects and shapes society's beliefs, values and behaviour. In diverse societies like India, films influence social attitudes, cultural identities and public discourse.

Positive Influences on Social Fabric

  1. Social awareness highlights neglected issues. e.g: Taare Zameen Par (2007) raised awareness about dyslexia.
  2. Gender equality challenges patriarchal attitudes. e.g: Pink (2016) emphasised consent.
  3. Social justice exposes discrimination. e.g: Article 15 (2019) highlighted caste inequalities.
  4. National integration promotes shared identities across communities. e.g: Chak De! India (2007).
  5. Civic responsibility encourages public participation. e.g: Rang De Basanti (2006).
  6. Cultural preservation promotes regional traditions, languages and heritage. e.g: Kantara (2022) portrayed coastal Karnataka's cultural traditions.

Negative Influences on Social Fabric

  1. Social stereotyping may reinforce caste, gender and religious prejudices.
  2. Normalisation of violence may glorify aggression as acceptable behaviour.
  3. Gender objectification can reinforce harmful attitudes towards women.
  4. Communal polarisation may deepen divisions through one-sided portrayals.
  5. Unrealistic lifestyles encourage materialism and unhealthy social expectations.

Way Forward

  1. Responsible filmmaking should encourage balanced and sensitive portrayals.
  2. Media literacy must develop critical viewing habits among audiences.
  3. Creative freedom should be protected alongside responsible content classification.
  4. Inclusive storytelling must promote diverse and marginalised voices.

Cinema is a powerful instrument of social transformation. Responsible storytelling and informed audiences can strengthen equality, empathy and social harmony.
