"The strength of a society is not in its laws, but in the morality of its people." – Swami Vivekananda
What does this quote mean to you? Explain its relevance in contemporary society with suitable examples.

Swami Vivekananda emphasises that laws provide external regulation, while morality develops internal self-discipline. A strong society requires citizens who act ethically even without legal enforcement.

Meaning of the Quote

  1. Moral conscience guides individuals beyond fear of punishment. e.g: Returning lost valuables voluntarily.
  2. Internalised values encourage honesty, compassion and responsibility.
  3. Limits of legislation become evident when social attitudes remain unchanged. e.g: Persistence of caste discrimination despite Article 17.

Relevance in Contemporary Society

  1. Social harmony grows through tolerance and mutual respect. e.g: Communities supporting each other during disasters.
  2. Ethical governance requires integrity beyond legal compliance. e.g: Civil servants refusing undue favours.
  3. Environmental responsibility depends on voluntary conservation. e.g: Bishnoi community's protection of wildlife.
  4. Corporate ethics demands fairness beyond regulatory requirements. e.g: Voluntary disclosure of product defects.

Way Forward

  1. Value-based education must cultivate empathy and civic responsibility.
  2. Ethical leadership should promote integrity through personal example.
  3. Community participation must strengthen collective moral responsibility.

Laws establish minimum standards, but morality inspires higher conduct. Together, they create a just, compassionate and resilient society.
