"The integration of Artificial Intelligence in legal education is transforming both pedagogy and professional skill development.” Critically examine the opportunities and challenges posed by AI in Indian law schools in the context of declining classroom engagement.
The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into legal education is ushering in a structural transformation in pedagogy, learning outcomes, and professional preparedness. This shift is occurring alongside institutional changes such as the Delhi High Court attendance judgment, which has reduced mandatory classroom attendance and accelerated the move toward technology-enabled learning.
At one level, AI acts as a powerful enabler. It enhances accessibility, efficiency, and personalization in legal education. AI tools can simplify complex legal doctrines, generate summaries of lengthy judgments, and provide adaptive practice questions tailored to individual learning levels. Platforms such as Manupatra and SCC Online leverage AI for intelligent legal research, enabling students to quickly map case laws and doctrinal evolution. Further, AI systems like ChatGPT and Harvey AI can draft contracts, pleadings, and case briefs, thereby aligning legal education more closely with real-world professional tasks. The use of AI tools such as SUVAS by the Supreme Court of India also indicates that the legal ecosystem itself is embracing such technologies, necessitating corresponding changes in legal training.
However, the integration of AI also raises critical concerns. The most significant is the potential erosion of analytical reasoning and critical thinking, which lie at the core of legal education and jurisprudence. Over-reliance on AI-generated summaries may discourage deep reading of judgments and independent interpretation. Additionally, declining classroom attendance reduces opportunities for debate, peer learning, and mentorship, which are essential for developing argumentative skills. There are also ethical and reliability concerns—instances of AI “hallucinating” case citations highlight the dangers of uncritical dependence on such systems. Further, algorithmic biases and lack of transparency may distort legal understanding if not carefully regulated.
Globally, leading institutions such as Harvard Law School and Stanford Law School are proactively integrating AI into their curricula, combining technological tools with courses on legal ethics and accountability. This underscores the need for Indian law schools to adopt a balanced and forward-looking approach.
In this evolving context, the role of law teachers is undergoing a fundamental shift—from traditional lecturers to facilitators, editors, and ethical supervisors. They must guide students in verifying AI outputs, contextualizing legal principles, and cultivating independent reasoning.
In conclusion, AI represents both an opportunity and a disruption for legal education. A blended pedagogical model, grounded in the principle of human-in-the-loop, is essential to harness its benefits while preserving the intellectual rigor and ethical foundations of the legal profession.
