What are the major causes of rising wholesale inflation in India? Discuss its impact on the Indian economy and suggest measures to control it.

Wholesale Price Index (WPI) measures price changes at the wholesale level. India's WPI inflation reached 11.39% in September 2026, driven by rising fuel, food and manufactured goods prices.

Major Causes of Rising Wholesale Inflation

  1. Global energy prices increase production and transportation costs. e.g: Fuel and power inflation reached 25.85% in September 2026.
  2. Food supply disruptions raise agricultural commodity prices. e.g: Uneven monsoon rainfall affecting crop production.
  3. Imported inflation transmits global commodity price increases. e.g: West Asian tensions raising crude oil prices.
  4. Rising industrial input costs increase manufactured goods prices. e.g: Higher prices of metals, chemicals and plastics.
  5. Supply-chain disruptions increase logistics and procurement costs.
  6. Currency depreciation makes imported fuel and raw materials costlier.

Impact on the Indian Economy

  1. Higher production costs reduce industrial profitability. e.g: MSMEs facing expensive raw materials.
  2. Retail inflation may increase as producers pass costs to consumers.
  3. Reduced purchasing power affects household consumption.
  4. Agricultural distress increases when fertiliser and diesel costs rise.
  5. Investment slowdown may occur due to rising business uncertainty.
  6. Monetary policy challenges emerge as inflationary pressures complicate interest-rate decisions.

Way Forward

  1. Strengthen supply chains through improved storage, logistics and agricultural infrastructure.
  2. Manage food inflation using buffer stocks and targeted market interventions.
  3. Reduce import dependence through renewable energy and domestic manufacturing.
  4. Maintain monetary-fiscal coordination to contain inflation expectations without unnecessarily restricting growth.

Controlling wholesale inflation requires addressing supply-side bottlenecks, global price vulnerabilities and domestic production costs while sustaining economic growth.
