The recent earthquake in Indonesia has once again highlighted the tectonic vulnerability of the Indo-Pacific seismic belt. Explain the geological processes responsible for its high seismicity and discuss their implications for disaster preparedness.

Tips for your answer

  • Connect the Indo-Pacific belt with plate convergence and subduction rather than merely stating that Indonesia lies on the Ring of Fire.
  • Remember the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indo-Australian and Sunda plates, Flores back-arc thrust, Sunda-Andaman subduction zone and Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System.
  • Do not make the answer entirely Indonesia-centric. Use the Indonesian earthquake as the current trigger and then explain the wider tectonic geography and disaster implications of the Indo-Pacific belt.
