The recent global move to rename Polycystic Ovary Syndrome as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) reflects a broader understanding of women’s metabolic and hormonal health. Discuss the significance of this change. How can greater awareness and public health interventions help address lifestyle-related hormonal disorders in India?

The recent global consensus to rename Polycystic Ovary Syndrome as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) reflects a broader scientific understanding of the disorder. The earlier term “PCOS” focused mainly on ovarian cysts, whereas the condition actually involves complex hormonal, metabolic, and endocrine dysfunctions affecting overall health.

The renaming is significant for several reasons. First, it acknowledges the metabolic dimension of the disease, including insulin resistance, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular risks. Many women with PCOS do not necessarily have ovarian cysts, leading to confusion and delayed diagnosis. PMOS therefore provides a more accurate clinical description.

Second, the change helps improve awareness and reduce stigma surrounding women’s reproductive health. In India, hormonal disorders are often ignored due to social taboos, lack of awareness, and limited access to specialized healthcare. A broader terminology can encourage holistic treatment instead of focusing only on fertility-related concerns.

Third, it highlights the growing burden of lifestyle-related diseases in India. Sedentary lifestyles, stress, unhealthy diets, and rising obesity levels among adolescents and young women have contributed to increasing hormonal and metabolic disorders.

Public health interventions are therefore essential. Schools and colleges should promote awareness regarding menstrual and hormonal health. Preventive healthcare through regular screening, nutrition counselling, and fitness programs must be strengthened. Integration of women’s metabolic health into primary healthcare and digital health platforms can improve early diagnosis and treatment access. Community-based awareness campaigns can also reduce stigma and encourage timely medical consultation.

Thus, the transition from PCOS to PMOS is not merely a terminological change but a step toward more scientific, inclusive, and preventive healthcare for women. India must adopt a multidisciplinary public health approach to address such emerging lifestyle-linked disorders effectively.
