Probity in governance means upholding honesty, integrity and ethical conduct in public affairs. It ensures that public power is exercised for public welfare rather than personal gain.

Importance of Probity in Governance

  1. Public trust increases when officials act honestly and transparently.
  2. Prevents corruption by discouraging misuse of public office. e.g: Central Vigilance Commission.
  3. Ensures accountability by making officials answerable for decisions. e.g: Social audits under MGNREGA.
  4. Promotes transparency through public access to information. e.g: RTI Act, 2005.
  5. Ensures fairness in public resource allocation. e.g: Transparent government e-procurement.
  6. Strengthens integrity by preventing conflicts of interest in administrative decisions.

Measures to Strengthen Probity

  1. Enforce ethical standards and conduct rules.
  2. Strengthen vigilance and independent oversight. e.g: Lokpal.
