How do changes in immigration policies of developed countries affect Indian workers abroad? Discuss the major challenges and suggest measures to protect their interests.

Immigration policies regulate foreign workers' entry, employment and settlement. The UK's earned-settlement proposals highlight how changing migration rules affect Indian workers' livelihoods and long-term security.

Impact on Indian Workers Abroad

  1. Employment uncertainty arises from stricter visa and sponsorship requirements. e.g: UK's restrictions on overseas care-worker recruitment.
  2. Settlement insecurity disrupts long-term plans. e.g: Proposed UK default settlement period increasing from five to ten years.
  3. Financial burden increases through visa renewals and legal expenses.
  4. Family separation may result from restrictions on dependants. e.g: UK's restrictions on care-worker dependants.
  5. Worker exploitation increases when visas depend on employers. e.g: UK revoked sponsorship licences of around 1,800 exploitative employers.
  6. Remittance uncertainty affects families dependent on overseas earnings.
  7. Skilled migration may shift towards countries offering predictable pathways. e.g: Indian professionals exploring alternative destinations.

Measures to Protect Indian Workers

  1. Bilateral diplomacy should secure fair migration arrangements. e.g: India-UK Migration and Mobility Partnership.
  2. Legal assistance through embassies must support distressed workers. e.g: MADAD portal.
  3. Recruitment regulation should prevent fraudulent agents and excessive fees. e.g: eMigrate portal.
  4. Skill certification should improve international employability. e.g: Skill India International Centres.
  5. Social security agreements should protect workers' contributions and benefits.
  6. Destination diversification should reduce dependence on individual countries.
  7. Reintegration support should assist returning migrants through skilling and employment.

India must protect its diaspora through diplomatic engagement, ethical recruitment and stronger worker safeguards while respecting host countries' immigration policies.
