Astronomers have discovered a faint, elusive exoplanet, Beta Pictoris d, orbiting the young star Beta Pictoris.
This gas giant is the dimmest planet ever directly imaged from Earth.
Two independent teams detected the planet using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile and NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
The discovery was published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters on July 15.

Beta Pictoris d is located 63 light-years from Earth in the southern constellation Pictor.
The star system Beta Pictoris is relatively young, estimated to be around 20 to 23 million years old.

The JWST team, led by Aidan Gibbs from the University of California San Diego, identified the planet by detecting the unique chemical fingerprint of its atmosphere, a novel technique.
Beta Pictoris d is approximately 2.4 times the mass of Jupiter and takes about 91 years to orbit its star.
Its discovery makes Beta Pictoris only the second planetary system known to have more than two directly imaged planets.
