Let’s begin.

UPSC 2024 Cut-Offs – Prelims, Mains & Final Selection

The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is conducted every year to select officers for India's top administrative services like the IAS, IPS, IFS, and others. The exam is held in three stages—PrelimsMains, and the Personality Test (Interview).

The UPSC Result 2024 was officially declared on 22nd April 2025. The Final Result is prepared based on a candidate’s performance in the Mains written exam and the Personality Test. Analyzing cut-off marks gives us valuable insight into the changing trends and competition levels.

UPSC Prelims 2024 Cut-Off

In the Preliminary stage, only marks from the General Studies Paper I (out of 200) are considered for the cut-off. The CSAT paper (Paper-II) is qualifying in nature. Candidates need to score at least 33% (66 out of 200) to be eligible for evaluation of Paper I. Here are the official cut-off marks for UPSC Prelims 2024:

Now that we’ve gone through the cut-offs for all three stages, let’s take a moment to reflect on what these numbers reveal about the 2024 exam cycle.

UPSC Result 2024 Cut-off Analysis: What You Should Know

The UPSC Civil Services Examination continues to stand as a benchmark of merit, resilience, and national service. This year, Shakti Dubey secured the All India Rank 1, leading a list of 1009 selected candidates. Notably, in a strong stride toward gender parity, 3 out of the top 5 ranks have been secured by female candidates

For Prelims

  • General category cut-off rose from 75.41 (2023) to 87.98 (2024)
  • SC and ST categories also saw notable increases (SC: +19.78, ST: +26.41)

Outcome for Aspirants

1. The sharp rise of over 12 marks suggests that the Prelims 2024 paper was less difficult than 2023, which was considered a tough paper.

2. UPSC often alternates the difficulty level each year. As a serious aspirant, you must prepare with consistency. Build depth in your concepts and be ready for any kind of paper.

3. Increased competition; aspirants from all categories need to aim higher and reduce dependency on category margins.

For Mains

  • Slight drop in cut-offs across most categories compared to 2023
  • Overall cut-offs show Mains continues to demand broad-based preparation
  • GS Paper II (Polity + Governance) saw better scores than GS Papers I and III
  • Concept-based optional subjects performed better

Outcome for Aspirants

1. The written stage continues to offer consistency. Aspirants should work dedicatedly on strong writing skills to stay competitive.

2. Prepare static subjects deeply. Mains rewards depth, structure, and articulation.

3. Optional subjects rooted in conceptual clarity performed better. Choose an optional subject that aligns with your interest and thinking style.

Final Cut-off

  • Final cut-off dropped from 953 (2023) to 947 (2024) for the General category
  • OBC (910) and EWS (917) cut-offs were just 37 and 30 marks below the General category, respectively.
  • SC (880) and ST (884) cut-offs also remained closely bunched, with ST exceeding SC by 4 marks.
  • Candidates with consistent scores across GS, Essay, Optional, and Interview made it through.
  • Interview scores varied widely (from ~110 to 210), but couldn't compensate for weak written marks.

Outcome for Aspirants

1. The Personality Test remains unpredictable. Strong communication, presence of mind, and clarity of thought can make a significant impact.

2. This slight fall shows how Mains performance can heavily influence final selection, especially when Interviews are less differentiating.

3. Margins are tightening across categories. Don’t rely on category buffers. Everyone is in a competitive pool, and a few marks can make a huge difference in rank and service.

4. Don’t treat the Interview as a make-or-break factor alone. The bulk of your marks come from Mains.

Moving on, let’s talk about what your rank decides—your future in the civil services.

Service Allocation: How Cut-Offs Impact Final Posting

Clearing the exam is one thing, but how high you score determines your service allocation. Here's how the 2024 allocations reflect that:

Top Ranks = IAS, IFS, IPS

  • IAS had 180 seats, mostly going to the top 80–100 rankers (General category).
  • IFS had only 55 seats, even more selective, typically under the top 100.
  • IPS with 147 seats went to candidates up to around rank 200–250.

Aim high. If your goal is IAS or IFS, you’ll need consistent excellence across all stages.

Mid-Ranks = Central Services Group 'A'

  • Over 600 candidates were allocated to services like IRS, IAAS, IRTS, IDAS, etc.
  • These go to ranks roughly in the 150–600 range, depending on category and preferences.

Lower Ranks = Group ‘B’ Services

  • 142 seats, often filled by those just above the final cut-off.
  • Includes services like DANICS, DANIPS, and Pondicherry Civil Service.

These roles also offer growth. Many Group B officers rise through the ranks and make a big impact.

Every single mark matters. Whether you aim for IAS or IPS, be strategic, consistent, and realistic in your efforts and service preferences.

What 2024 Taught Us & How You Should Prepare Now

Before you dive back into books or test series, take a breath. Let’s reflect, not just on what the numbers said, but what they meant for serious aspirants like you.

2024 once again reminded us that UPSC is not a predictable exam. It rewards not just knowledge, but balance, consistency, and strategic thinking. And if you’re planning your path, here’s how you can learn from this year’s journey.

1. Balance Your Focus Across All Stages

UPSC is a three-stage process, and each stage has its demands. Prepare in a way that builds momentum from Prelims clarity to Mains depth to Interview presence.

2. Don’t Take CSAT Lightly

Even top GS scorers failed due to CSAT. Practice regularly, especially comprehension and logic. One paper shouldn’t decide your entire year.

3. Consistency Beats Intensity

Don't wait for the "perfect month" to start or restart. What worked in 2024 were consistent efforts and year-long stability. A daily 6-hour focus can do more than a distracted 12.

4. Don’t Just Chase Trends, Build Fundamentals

Difficulty levels fluctuate. 2023 Prelims was brutal, 2024 was milder. But UPSC is designed to keep changing. Instead of chasing patterns, build a strong base.

5. Work on Your Personality

Don’t fake it. Read newspapers, form opinions, build hobbies, and improve articulation. UPSC looks for grounded, aware, and thoughtful personalities.

Final Words

UPSC trends will keep changing, but your fundamentals should remain strong. Build your preparation like a civil servant would approach policy: balanced, aware, and solution-focused.

If 2024 taught us anything, it’s this: you don’t need to be extraordinary, you just need to prepare like someone who believes they belong there.
