Reasoning

Prelims 2025

Consider the following statements:

I. If AB>C<D>E>FG=HA \le B > C < D > E > F \ge G = H; then B is always greater than E. II. If P>Q=RS=TU=V>WP > Q = R \ge S = T \le U = V > W; then S is always less than V.

Which of the statements above is/are correct?

Select an option to attempt

Explanation

Statement I is incorrect: AB>C<D>E>FG=HA \le B > C < D > E > F \ge G = H. Between B and E we have B>CB > C, C<DC < D, D>ED > E (mixed directions), so B and E are not comparably fixed. Example: B=5B=5, C=4C=4, D=6D=6, E=5E=5 satisfies the chain, giving B=EB=E (not B>EB>E). Hence I is false.

Statement II is incorrect: P>Q=RS=TU=V>WP > Q = R \ge S = T \le U = V > W implies SVS \le V (since RSR \ge S and TUT \le U with S=TS=T and U=VU=V). It need not be strictly less. Example: Q=R=4Q=R=4, S=T=3S=T=3, U=V=3U=V=3, with P>4P>4 and W<3W<3, gives S=VS=V (not S<VS<V). Hence II is false.

Therefore, neither I nor II is correct.
