A man takes half time in rowing a certain distance downstream than upstream. What is the ratio of the speed in still water to the speed of current?

Select an option to attempt

Explanation

Let the speed of the man in still water be xx and the speed of the current be yy. Let the total distance be DD.

Downstream speed = x+yx+y Upstream speed = xyx-y According to the question,

Time taken in rowing upstream = 2×2 \times Time taken in rowing downstream

Simplifying: x+y=2x2yx+y=2x-2y

x=3yx=3y Thus, the ratio x:y=3:1x:y = 3:1. Hence, option (d) is the correct answer.

Alternatively, If the time taken is halved, the speed must double, as the distance remains constant. So,

x+y=2(xy)x+y=2(x-y) Simplifying: x=3yx=3y Thus, the ratio x:y=3:1x:y = 3:1.
