Passage

I am a scientist, privileged to be somebody who tries to understand nature using the tools of science. But it is also clear that there are some really important questions that science cannot really answer, such as: Why is there something instead of nothing? Why are we here? In those domains, I have found that faith provides a better path to answers. I find it oddly anachronistic that in today’s culture there seems to be a widespread presumption that scientific and spiritual views are incompatible.

Which of the following is the most logical and rational inference that can be made from the above passage?

Select an option to attempt

Explanation

Option A is incorrect. "It is the faith and not science that can finally solve all the problems of mankind" is too extreme and not supported by the passage. The scientist does not claim that faith alone can solve all problems; rather, the author points to the strengths of both science and faith in different contexts.

Option B is correct. The author is suggesting that science and faith can coexist and play complementary roles. Science excels in understanding the natural world, while faith is needed for answering existential and metaphysical questions that science cannot address. The passage conveys the idea that when science and faith are viewed as addressing different domains, they can complement each other.

Option C is incorrect. "There are some very fundamental questions that cannot be answered by either science or faith" is not directly supported by the passage. The passage emphasizes that while some questions are beyond the scope of science, they are within the domain of faith, suggesting that both science and faith provide meaningful answers in their respective realms.

Option D is incorrect. "In today’s culture, scientific views are given more importance than spiritual views" is not the central focus of the passage. The author does mention that it is odd to view science and faith as incompatible, but the focus is more on the complementary nature of the two rather than the relative importance of each in society.
