Motupalli was the most significant seaport of the Kakatiya kingdom. To promote foreign trade, King Ganapati Deva issued the famous Motupalli Inscription (Abhaya Shasanam), which acted as a charter of security by granting protection to merchants and fixing reasonable customs duties on exports and imports. The Venetian traveler Marco Polo visited this port (referring to it as 'Mutfili') during the reign of Queen Rudrama Devi and documented the kingdom's prosperity, specifically praising its production of fine muslin and diamonds.
