A new 33 km diversion railway line between Bhigwan and Pophlaj stations on the Daund-Kurudwadi section of the South Central Railway is set to open in April.
The project cost Rs. 6.91 crores, with the Maharashtra Government contributing Rs. 5.67 crores.
The diversion was necessitated by the construction of a dam on the Bhima River at Ujjani, which would submerge 34 km of the existing railway track.
The new line includes four major bridges, with the Bhima River bridge being the longest, featuring 23 spans of 60 feet each.
Detailed Insights:
The Ujjani Dam project on the Bhima River, a tributary of the Krishna River, required the railway diversion to prevent the submergence of the existing track.
Construction of the diversion line began in 1971, and the project provided approximately 18 lakh mandays of employment.
The South Central Railway is covering the remaining project expenses, as the diversion was initiated at the request of the Maharashtra Government.
