Rajnath praises rise in ‘women’s strength’ in IAF, Pg9
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hails historic commissioning of first NDA women officers into IAF at AFA, Dundigal, marking a significant boost to inclusive force strength.
The first batch of women officers from the National Defence Academy (NDA) was commissioned into the Indian Air Force (IAF) on June 13, 2026.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reviewed the Combined Graduation Parade (CGP) of the 217th Course at the Air Force Academy (AFA), Dundigal, near Hyderabad.
Five women officers from NDA were commissioned, with two joining the fighter stream and three joining maintenance and ground duty branches.
A total of 231 flight cadets graduated, including 37 women, marking a significant increase in female participation in the IAF.
Detailed Insights:
This commissioning marks a historic milestone, following the Supreme Court's 2021 directive that mandated the opening of the NDA to women candidates.
The women cadets completed three years of joint-services training at NDA, graduating in June 2025, before undergoing branch-specific training at the Air Force Academy.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted that the increasing presence of women makes the IAF more balanced and robust, reflecting the strength of an inclusive force.
The graduating batch also included officers from the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and two trainees from the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, showcasing international training cooperation.
Rajnath Singh referenced Operation Sindoor (2025) as a demonstration of the IAF's capability to destroy enemy infrastructure with precision, attributing success to indigenous platforms and dedicated personnel.
The Minister urged the newly commissioned officers to remain vigilant against evolving threats and to adapt, adopt, and innovate in their responses to modern warfare.
