Detailed Insights:
INS Mahendragiri is named after the majestic mountain range in the Eastern Ghats, symbolizing resilience and strength.
The frigate is powered by a modern Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, enabling high-speed operations with exceptional endurance.
It is designed for diverse roles, including anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine operations, as well as maritime security, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief missions.
The construction of INS Mahendragiri has significantly involved a vast network of Indian industries, including numerous Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), thereby strengthening the nation’s defense industrial base and generating employment.
The Project 17A frigates represent an evolution from the earlier Shivalik-class (Project 17) frigates, incorporating improved stealth characteristics and more advanced weapon and sensor systems.
Other commissioned frigates under Project 17A include INS Nilgiri (January 2025), INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri (August 2025), INS Taragiri (April 2026), and INS Dunagiri (June 2026).
The induction of such indigenously built warships reinforces India's position as a leading warship-building nation and contributes to a secure, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
