The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has launched an AI-enabled Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) at Shastri Park in Northeast Delhi.
Inaugurated by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on October 1, the ICCC is the country's largest pollution control "war room" designed for real-time monitoring of pollution sources.
The center operates 24/7 with multiple shifts and integrates data from various sources, including 56 air quality monitoring stations, meteorological data, and information from construction sites.
It uses AI-enabled cameras to monitor over 700 construction sites and GPS tracking for mechanical road sweepers and field teams.
The ICCC issues real-time alerts for pollution spikes, such as a 60-point jump in Air Quality Index (AQI) in Wazirpur, and flags issues like offline monitoring stations or non-transmitting cameras.
Detailed Insights:
The ICCC aims to replace fragmented monitoring systems with a unified digital platform for comprehensive environmental data analysis.
It integrates APIs from key institutions like the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), India Meteorological Department (IMD), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI).
The system categorizes alerts into Priority 1 (P1) for immediate ground intervention and Priority 2 (P2) for issues like significant PM10 jumps.
A major challenge for the center is "AI-layering," which involves human operators manually tagging video feeds to train the AI algorithm for automated issue classification.
Future plans include integrating Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and monitoring traffic congestion hotspots to identify pollution sources.
The center also tracks the operational dossier of mechanical road sweepers, including their speed and adherence to routes, and manages a complaint-handling system for citizen grievances.
The E-Datalens Air Quality Analytics platform, developed by Datalens Technologies Pvt Ltd with global tech partners, powers the control center.
Key Concepts Involved:
Air Quality Index (AQI): A numerical scale used to communicate air quality levels, indicating how clean or polluted the air is and its associated health effects.
PM10 and PM2.5: Particulate matter refers to microscopic solid or liquid particles suspended in the air; PM10 are particles 10 micrometers or less in diameter, while PM2.5 are finer particles 2.5 micrometers or less, posing greater health risks.
Temperature Inversion: A meteorological phenomenon where a layer of warm air traps colder air, along with pollutants, closer to the Earth's surface, preventing their dispersion.
